Welcome to Arts and Societies at Worcester! Please see the drop-down menu for details about what’s on offer here. The main two college arts societies to be aware of are the Buskins Dramatic Society and the Worcester College Music Society (WCMS).
Worcester has a very lively arts scene. We run termly Open Mic nights, to which everyone is welcome, whether to listen or perform. In Hilary Term, 6th Week is Arts Week, which in years gone by has involved art and photography competitions, concerts, plays, t-shirt making and an Arts Dinner. In Trinity Term, we have Worc in the Park – the arts event of the year! It’s a festival showcasing Worcester arts, with music, drama, dance and even face painting on the programme. This year (2020) the event has been postponed to Michaelmas Term, and will incorporate appropriate social distancing and safety measures to minimise the risk of Covid-19 infection. Keep an eye on the JCR Facebook page for updates on this!
On a weekly basis, WCMS puts on concerts on Tuesdays at 8:45pm in the Memorial Room. Each week has a different theme, so there are performance opportunities for all, regardless of genre or level of experience. The WCMS ensembles (see the drop-down menu) rehearse weekly in preparation for the Ensembles Concert, which tends to be in the last week of term. This year, WCMS is hoping to introduce lunchtime recitals open to the wider university, to take advantage of the new pianos in the Memorial Room and Sultan Nazrin Shah Centre.
If you feel that there is something missing from Worcester Arts, or if you have any ideas for events to be run, please drop me a message – I’d be delighted to hear from you! If there’s an arts-related project you’d like to put on yourself, please also get in contact, as I’d love to help out and provide JCR financial support where possible.
I’ll keep this page and the JCR Facebook page updated with the arts happenings at Worcester, as well as opportunities and events in the wider university and city which are relevant to Worcester students.
